To Proposed Academy In Northampton Sponsored By The David Ross Foundation
17 December 2009
Below is a press release received from the David Ross Foundation.
David Ross, the chair of the David Ross Foundation, is pleased to announce the appointment of Philip Cantwell as principal designate of the proposed academy on the site of Unity College, Northamptonshire. Mr Cantwell will take up his post as principal designate when the academy opens in September 2010.
The proposed academy is due to replace the existing Unity College school. It will have the capacity to educate
1450 students aged 11-19.
Philip Cantwell is currently the Headmaster of The King’s School, Tynemouth (HMC). The King’s School is the
largest of the Woodard Foundation of Church of England schools. The school has an age range of 4 - 18 and 800
students on the school roll. As well as being a very strong academic school, it is also committed to the all-round
development of students through extra-curricular activities. The school's latest Independent Schools Inspectorate
report in 2009 assessed the school to be ‘outstanding’.
The David Ross Foundation already sponsors the Havelock Academy in Grimsby, which opened in 2007.
David Ross said: "Philip has an outstanding track record of developing strong leadership teams whose focus on academic standards is equalled by their commitment to providing exceptional pastoral support for students. I
believe staff and students will flourish under the leadership of such a strong and experienced head teacher. I very much look forward to working with him and am confident that he will drive improvements for students and bring
considerable benefits to the local community".
